Our History

1918: Humble Beginnings

The story of the American Advertising Federation of Baltimore (AAFB) begins in 1918, when it was established as the women’s auxiliary to the Men’s Advertising Club. This early foundation set the stage for future achievements in the advertising world.

 

1920: A Bold New Path

In 1920, the women of the auxiliary stepped out on their own, founding the Women’s Advertising Club of Baltimore. They aligned with the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World, which later evolved into the American Advertising Federation, solidifying their place in the national advertising landscape.

1940s–1960s: Advocacy and Innovation

During the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, the club became a powerful advocate for Truth in Advertising and launched a College Scholarship Foundation. These initiatives reflected the club’s commitment to integrity and supporting future advertising professionals.

1973: A New Era

1In 1973, the Women’s Advertising Club, The Art Director’s Club, and the Maryland Industrial Marketers merged to form the Advertising Association of Baltimore (AAB). This landmark merger opened the organization to all advertising professionals, broadening its reach and impact.

1974: The First ADDYs

The AAB introduced the “Best in Baltimore” American Advertising Awards program in 1974. This initiative has since grown into one of the most prestigious awards programs in the nation, celebrating outstanding creativity and innovation in advertising.

1983: National Recognition

In 1983, the AAFB was honored with the “Club of the Year” award from the American Advertising Federation, recognizing its outstanding contributions and leadership in the advertising community.

2009: Rebranding for the Future 

Facing new challenges and opportunities, the organization rebranded in 2009 as the American Advertising Federation Baltimore. This change reinforced its connection with the national AAF while continuing its mission to promote excellence in advertising.

 

2020: A Centennial Celebration 

In 2020, the AAFB marked its 100th anniversary with a spectacular 46th Annual American Advertising Awards Show. Held at Port Discovery Children’s Museum, the event embraced a whimsical “Wonderland” theme, celebrating a century of advertising excellence.

 

2024: A Golden Milestone 

In 2024, AAFB celebrated a major milestone with its 50th Annual American Advertising Awards Show at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. This momentous event set a new record with twenty-nine Gold ADDYs and eighty-nine Silver ADDYs, totaling 118 awards. The celebration attracted over 300 local professionals, underscoring the continued vitality and impact of AAFB in the advertising industry.
